Ballston Placemaking AND Wayfinding — 2019/2020 - Arlington, VA. ....

“Placemaking, as defined, is a hands-on approach to improving a community’s assets and establishing certain definable characteristics that further promote these assets through community awareness, inspiration and often reimagination to further enhance and invigorate a community’s overall vitality as perceived by both visitors and residents, plus in many ways, increasing the perceived value and social vision for these areas of interest while at the same time creating a cohesive methodology for defining and navigating specific destinations. All of the time involving people within the community itself - as well as Urban Planners, Architects, EGD Designers, and yes, City Officials that in the end, control the budget funding and final approvals for the overall planned vision.”

In early 2019 Pinnacle 33 was awarded the multi-faceted hardscape and signage program by The Community of Ballston which included Gateway Identification, light pole mounted circular Icon ID’s, strategically located pedestrian directories and sculptural, median-located decorative fencing that reflected the newly designed Ballston identity and further enhanced the neighborhood’s Brand at street level.

Ballston Sculptural Fencing — 2019 - Arlington, VA. ....

As an extension of the overall contract award for the Ballston Placemaking and Wayfinding Project and as a follow-on to a recent successful project with Alexandria-based LandDesign, Pinnacle33 was also awarded approximately 850 linear feet of decorative metal sculptural fencing in late 2018.

The overall goal for the decorative barriers was to provide additional reinforcement of the new Ballston Brand and to further enhance the streetscape areas and medians with sculptural elements that would carry characteristics of the new Ballston Identity and also provide framing for the views down the main community corridor - with newcolorful seasonal landscaping designed by LandDesign the overall design objectives were accomplished in a subtle yet dramatic fashion further complimenting the Ballston community’s assets and vision.

The decorative steel fencing was fabricated in our shop using .375” sheet steel vs. aluminum, which would not meet the project’s budget concerns as the fencing would need to be approximately 1000’ in total length. After utilizing a waterjet to create the decorative branding elements, we applied a custom silver powder-coated finish to protect the steel from deteriorating over the many years it will be in place and to also further resist the harsh Northeast Corridor Winter environment and roadway salting treatments over time.

Our shop artisans created two initial full-scale prototypes for for LandDesign which are depicted in the two images - these displayed our shop’s overall craftsmanship and attention-to-detail in the welding and finishing details and also offered a closer look at the final characteristics and dimensionality of the new Ballston branding elements.

The overall project was very successful in the eyes of both the project designers, LandDesign and the Ballston Community, who can take pride in the fact that the community officials cared enough about their future and that of the many residents, businesses and retailers to take on and fund a project which would further enhance and bolster the perceived value and future image of the Ballston Corridor.

Emory Healthcare - DeKalb Rebranding — 2019 - Atlanta, GA. ....

In the late Spring of 2018 Emory Healthcare announced the acquisition of the very well respected Dekalb Medical Center, including all of it’s systemwide facilities and locations throughout the Atlanta Metro area.

Drawing upon previous successful projects and relationships, Emory Healthcare selected Pinnacle33 to oversee and provide all of the re-branding elements and associated manufacturing for the overall project. With the planned September unveiling of the new campus-wide name change and re-branding, Pinnacle33 was given a relatively short window to plan, engineer, permit, manufacture and install all of the new Emory blue and white identification elements and more importantly, cover up the new campus names until the planned unveiling and celebrations would take place.

After the unveiling of the primary signage elements, Pinnacle33 worked directly with Emory Healthcare to comprehensively rebrand signage and graphics across the spectrum of all three major campuses and fifty-five outpatient practice facilities. In total, the re-brand consisted of 22 primary building signs, 13 primary monument signs, 55 parking facility monument signs and hundreds of interior, lobby, room and regulatory signs, as well as dozens of new signs for the 5-story Decatur Parking facility. Manufacturing specifications and materials for the new exterior signage encompassed a variety of hi-end finishes including aluminum with routed acrylic faces, LED aluminum channel letters and custom stone bases to further compliment the upgraded appearance of the new campus-wide program. The overall outcome of the project was deemed a huge success by Emory Healthcare’s Vice President of Design and Facilities, David Pugh.
